In Memory of Prof Morton
By Gordon Hosking - Project Crimson Trustee
I always enjoyed Prof Morton’s wise words spoken in his gentle, distinctive brogue. He was a commited conservationist but had the breadth of vision to know that compromises had to be made, and he was a valued inaugral patron for the Project Crimson Trust in its beginning years. He gave the trust the honour of writing the Preface for Dr Phillip Simpson’s book “Pohutukawa and rata: New Zealand’s Iron-hearted trees”, in which he wrote “These are plants of Maori legend, their brief but spectacular blossoming peotically reminiscent of our own lives.” Prof Morton was also a leader in the fight to save the mighty podocarp forests of the central North Island, and his book “To save a forest: Whirinaki” will forever stand as one of his greatest contributions to the future of New Zealand’s landscape.
