About the Meridian-sponsored LEARNZ programme

LEARNZ is an interactive education programme that uses online tools such as live audio conferencing, web diaries, and videos to take students to places they would never usually get the chance to visit, without the expense and time of a physical field trip.

Meridian works in partnership with LEARNZ so trips featuring Meridian wind and water assets are offered to students as part of their virtual field trips education programme.

In term one LEARNZ registered students visited Meridian’s two North Island wind farms and in term two students took a virtual trip to the central South Island to learn about Meridian’s Waitaki hydro stations. In term three students visited Meridian’s southern-most hydro stations and its White Hill wind farm in Southland.

In October more than 2,000 primary, intermediate, and secondary school students from around the country participated in a virtual field-trip to the North Island’s east coast to learn about the pōhutukawa.

The four-day LEARNZ-run Project Crimson field is used to teach students about biodiversity, coastal ecosystems and habitats, land use, resource management and plant biology.

The east coast virtual field-trip also revealed pōhutukawa and rātā are in danger of becoming extinct.
