Inspired by a love of New Zealand’s native rata and pohutukawa trees, sales of this very special Pinot Noir from Ata Rangi have supported the work of the Project Crimson Trust for many years.

Founder and winemaker Clive Paton has long been a tree lover, and his work in this area was recognised in both 2006 and 2007 with a number of conservation awards. In his spare time he works actively on native tree planting at the Ata Rangi family Bush Block, 15 minutes south of Martinborough. The idea for Crimson evolved from Ata Rangi’s on-going association with the Project Crimson Trust through Clive’s work with rata propagation and planting. More info on this work can be found on Ata Rangi’s website ‘Bush Block’ page.

Ata Rangi report that their delicious Crimson ‘young vines’ pinot noir, with its beautiful pohutukawa-clad label, continues to wow wine lovers and media critics not only close to home, but in cities as diverse as Tokyo, London, Melbourne, Singapore and Rio. Reference to the work of Project Crimson is carried on the back label, helping to spread the word across the globe.

Crimson Pinot Noir (in three different size options) makes a fabulous gift ! The bottles can be packed in attractive, branded wooden boxes for a small extra cost and sent directly with a personalised card.

Crimson can be purchased directly from the winery (door to door delivery) for $35 per bottle.  There are also half bottles (375 ml) at $18 which make a wonderful Christmas ‘stocking stuffer’ - also ideal for older people who are drinking a little less.

For details and to purchase, visit the ‘Buy Wine’ page on the Ata Rangi website

Ata Rangi CRIMSON is an ongoing commitment to the Project Crimson Trust.

Crimson 2010

Crimson Pinot Noir 2010 is the wonderfully aromatic result of a cooler than normal summer and a warm, dry autumn that stretched lazily through to the end of our April harvest and well into May. Crushed rose-petal, light cherry, brambly notes and a hint of red licorice conspire to create an enchanting, heady fragrance. The silky smooth palate is beautifully balanced; seamless, feminine and very approachable.

Crimson is sourced primarily from 10 to 20 year old vines, compared to 30 years plus for our oldest pinot vines. It is made in a style intended for enjoying within a few years of the vintage, with all the same care and attention as is given to the main label Ata Rangi Pinot Noir.

Sales of this well-established younger vines pinot support the work of Project Crimson and the mission, "To enable pohutukawa and rata to flourish again in their natural habitat as icons in the hearts and minds of all New Zealanders."

Clive is fully committed to propagating and planting RATA and having this spread widely around the Wairarapa. Rata trees (Metrosideros Robusta) are now available for sale at our Cellar Door.
